Which town in Scotland has the motto “Against the stream they multiply”?
You’ll be forgiven for not knowing the answer to this particular question as I didn’t know the answer either but the town in question is the Royal Burgh of Peebles!
A bit of geography for you first…the town of Peebles sits straddling the majestic River Tweed, on the Scottish borders, it lies 23 miles of Edinburgh and 45 miles north of Northumberland National Park.
If you are a fan of fishing, this is the place for you, the River Tweed is famous for it’s Salmon (now you see where the motto comes from!). Of course if fishing isn’t your thing then the river does provide some picturesque walks for you to enjoy. The town has also the distinction of being ranked as the “Top Independent Retailing Town in Scotland” and 2nd in the UK, with a good selection of independent shops, rather than looking like any other high street in the UK!
The town also hosts a number of festivals and events including the week long Beltane Festival, the Rugby Sevens tournament, Peebles Jazz Festival, The Arts Festival and the Peebles Highland Games. While you are there there are plenty of places to eat and drink serving everything from traditional Scottish to Indian.
If you fancy a few rounds of golf, then you can visit the championship Peebles Golf Club, especially good if you are environmentally conscious as they are one of only 30 golf course in the world to be to achieve the “Award for Environmental Excellence”.
If you are looking for a hotel nearby, I would recommend taking a trip just a few minutes down the road to The Macdonald Cardrona Hotel Golf & Country Club. Some of the newly designed bedrooms have excellent views of the aforementioned Tweed Valley. As well as the lovely bedrooms the hotel has a spa and golf course so you’ll never be short of something to do. They also offer a range of outdoor activities at their own outdoor centre such as quad biking and archery which can be booked directly with the hotel. The hotel’s main restaurant has views of the golf course, or you could enjoy afternoon tea in the lounge or a couple of pre dinner drinks in the cocktail bar. For the golfers there is ‘Spikes Bar’ where you can refresh after a round of golf while watching the sport on TV.

Don’t just look at historical sights in Edinburgh, stay in one!
Back in the 1900′s you only had 2 choices of hotel when visiting Edinburgh, The Balmoral and The Caledonian, at opposite ends of Princes Street they were owned by rival rail companies. The later, owned by The Caledonian Railway Company was opened on 21st December 1903 to great acclaim. Even then, they were striving to be ‘green’, recycling the steam from the trains at the adjoining station to heat the hotel’s water supply! When the station closed in 1965 the hotel remained and by 2000 had been acquired by Hilton and remains so today. With it’s long history and grand stature in the city, the hotel has been stayed in by nearly every celebrity and well known person going…from Kings and Prime Ministers to Charlie Chaplin!
The name of the hotel is quite interesting, it is affectionately known in the city as ‘The Caley’ but the word Caledonia is a Latin word for Scotland, during the Roman occupation it was used to mean the Highlands Of Scotland, occupied by the Caledoni.
Another interesting fact about the hotel is that it recently became a member of the UK Tea Council, a go to for the best places to drink tea and have afternoon tea. The hotel’s elegant Pompadour restaurant serves afternoon tea daily from 2pm to 5pm and even offers a special children’s version. Don’t underestimate the importance of being a member of the Tea Council…it’s a serious business!!!
Today, as well as afternoon tea, the hotel offers an indoor pool, beauty salon and fitness centre as well as 2 restaurants, an American diner and bar and ‘The Caley Bar’ which has a selection of more than 250 malt whiskys. As you would expect from a 5* Hilton the rooms are spacious and comfortable decorated in contemporary cool, calm tones. Some of the rooms have excellent views of the castle, deluxe rooms and suite are also available so every taste is catered for!
