Which town in Scotland has the motto “Against the stream they multiply”?

You’ll be forgiven for not knowing the answer to this particular question as I didn’t know the answer either but the town in question is the Royal Burgh of Peebles!

A bit of geography for you first…the town of Peebles sits straddling the majestic River Tweed, on the Scottish borders, it lies 23 miles of Edinburgh and 45 miles north of Northumberland National Park.

If you are a fan of fishing, this is the place for you, the River Tweed is famous for it’s Salmon (now you see where the motto comes from!). Of course if fishing isn’t your thing then the river does provide some picturesque walks for you to enjoy. The town has also the distinction of being ranked as the “Top Independent Retailing Town in Scotland” and 2nd in the UK, with a good selection of independent shops, rather than looking like any other high street in the UK!

The town also hosts a number of festivals and events including the week long Beltane Festival, the Rugby Sevens tournament, Peebles Jazz Festival, The Arts Festival and the Peebles Highland Games. While you are there there are plenty of places to eat and drink serving everything from traditional Scottish to Indian.

If you fancy a few rounds of golf, then you can visit the championship Peebles Golf Club, especially good if you are environmentally conscious as they are one of only 30 golf course in the world to be to achieve the “Award for Environmental Excellence”.

If you are looking for a hotel nearby, I would recommend taking a trip just a few minutes down the road to The Macdonald Cardrona Hotel Golf & Country Club. Some of the newly designed bedrooms have excellent views of the aforementioned Tweed Valley. As well as the lovely bedrooms the hotel has a spa and golf course so you’ll never be short of something to do. They also offer a range of outdoor activities at their own outdoor centre  such as quad biking and archery which can be booked directly with the hotel. The hotel’s main restaurant has views of the golf course, or you could enjoy afternoon tea in the lounge or a couple of pre dinner drinks in the cocktail bar. For the golfers there is ‘Spikes Bar’ where you can refresh after a round of golf while watching the sport on TV.
